January- A Summary
Just so sum up the month (like, where the eff did it go?) I thought I'd do a post on it. More to give myself an idea of what I've actually achieved, this monthly summary can help me see the holes in my routine and whether I'm upholding my resolutions or if they have evolved into something else.
January to me is the perfect month to get yourself ahead. It's like one huge Monday. For anyone who thinks Mondays suck- they're actually great. Haven't you noticed how they fly by so quickly? Despite the early start, you're actually home before you know it and then your weekend hangover kicks in on Tuesday (I really don't enjoy Tuesdays).
Right, back to reflecting. January for me is like taking the time to think about how you want your year to go; financially, emotionally, socially, whether it's goal orientated, relaxing before you dive in, thinking about career moves or anything else. For me, I take January to be my month of minimal spending and getting ahead on either paying off a couple of things or bumping up the savings pot. I have treated myself to a couple of things this month, but I've still managed to put a few extra pennies away as well which is a lovely bonus I'm sure I'll be happy with later.
Next up, I've been getting back into the swing of work, which is always a drag when it follows the cheery Christmas season only a couple of weeks before. Even though everything is what you make of it, January is definitely one of the toughest months to get through. So getting back to work with all of it's trimmings is a fair bit to get used to when you've gotten used to waking up whenever you want and having a lot to eat (and drink) any time you like. It's back to business time for everyone.. For me though, my shift pattern means I have to put a bit more effort into maintaining a routine and trying to fit in exercise and time to grow my portfolio and spend quality time with the boyfriend and make new friends and see old friends and get to see the big amazing city I moved to in order to grow my Network.. As you can see I've got too much to even attempt to chew on. So This month has given me some time to think about the most important stuff and then prioritise the rest and give them realistic timescales.
The biggest thing I've managed to do (or at least I think I've done) is relax more and take some pressure off myself. I've had a few tough days where I've had to face facts and rethink my approach to certain situations. It's too easy to get stuck in the smallest parts of the bigger picture. Having moments of clarity where I saw a lot more than that moment has helped me get out of my own head and try to plan out how to get to various end goals. It's still a working progress and I'll admit I still have more 'off' days than I'd like but I'm still working towards it in small ways and still have hope I'll get there soon. It's when I remember how far I've come that I get that little buzz and realise I'm heading in the right direction even if it feels like everything is working against me.
Not only has relaxing into a new(ish) routine helped ease into a new year, it's also allowed me to work on various things that have indicated weaknesses and areas I need to work on. While slightly disheartening, it's actually given me a direction to work with and hopefully reflect on in the near future. I'm hoping to set achievable small goals which will still continue to grow with me as I progress. By taking the pressure off myself it's given me chance to see what I enjoy and want to achieve as opposed to what I think I should be doing.
Have you had a think about the month just gone? January is now over, and time doesn't slow down for anyone. I'm hoping to keep these reflection posts each month to see where I'm going. What realisations have you had this month?
